Due to our modern lifestyles our bodies don’t function as well as they could. All of the time we spend sitting, standing or hunched over a computer or phone takes its toll on a body that evolved to move far more variably and frequently than the way that it does now. Over time the body adapts to this sedentary way of life, we lose muscle mass, muscles weaken, tissues get stiff, joints reduce in their range of motion, the body slows, gets stiff, we put on fat and we just think ‘I’m a little unfit’. To address this, people far too often look towards running as a cheap, easily accessible way to lose weight and get fit without understanding the demands running can have on the body, if it’s not prepared to do so.

250% is the percentage of standing load your body experiences in every single stride while running. That is to say; the load (force) your foot, leg and torso experiences every single time your foot strikes the ground whilst running equates to 2.5x what it does while standing. For a 65kg human, a force equating to 162.5kgs runs through the foot into the leg and is transferred into the torso of the body. If at any point the body isn’t working the way that it should, this force takes its toll on the skeletal, tendinous and muscular tissue of the body, and you wonder why you got injured while running…
